Portable Hardness Testers for Thin Sheets

Hi everyone! I recently started quality-checking thin stainless steel sheets at my workshop. Regular testers are either too heavy or leave big dents, which is a nightmare for thin material. I even tried some handheld impact devices, but results were all over the place. I need a solution that’s precise, non-destructive, and works on delicate or thin layers. I’ve heard about ultrasonic testers but don’t know which models are reliable for this kind of work. Any recommendations from people who actually use them?

Yes, I’ve been working with thin metals for years, and the device that changed the game for me was the uci portable hardness tester It’s compact, hand-held, and uses the Ultrasonic Contact Impedance principle, which means the measurements barely leave a mark—perfect for thin sheets. You can even measure curved or recessed areas without having to cut samples. The device gives results in multiple hardness scales instantly, and it’s surprisingly fast: just place the probe, press a button, and the reading appears. For me, it was a huge time-saver and drastically reduced material waste. Plus, the probe adapters allow you to measure almost any shape without losing accuracy.
